Good real estate practice has nothing to do with houses. Property remains the same. It is the people in those houses who change, who will determine how successful you are as a real estate agent.
This business is not about transactions it’s about building relationships. You can’t have a relationship with a house in the same way that you can’t shake hands with an iPad.
We sometimes make the mistake of thinking that networking, building profile and becoming well known can all be done by remote or through social media. That is incorrect.
Relationships are built through personal contact. By getting to know people and by letting people get to know you. What makes you tick. What you like and what you don’t like. We also need to know that about the people with whom we’re trying to build a relationship.
If you don’t have a genuine interest in people and you don’t care about what they need, what their aspirations are and what excites them, then you won’t be able to build a relationship with them.
We were born with two eyes, two ears and only one mouth. That means that one fifth of everything we do should be talking. The other 4/5 is observing and listening.
To successfully network you need to develop good listening skills and a genuine interest in what people are saying.
The best way to show interest is to listen intently and ask questions.
