Being a real estate agent is the easiest low paid job or the hardest high paid job.
In an earlier post, Brian Cannan listed the things you need to do to be a real estate professional. They included:
- Securing a mentor
- Getting to know the marketplace
- Always be learning
- Build relationships
- Work on your brand
- Get on top of data
- Work hard
- Be consistent
There are many short cuts you can take along the way as you build your business but my advice is to ignore them.
There are no shortcuts to success.
Every time I see an agent struggle with a lack of listings, no buyers, the phones not ringing and the multitude of other ‘dry gullies’ that frustrate us all, the words of a very wise man ring out in my ears. It is some advice he gave me many years ago when I was struggling.
I remember the situation well. I was sitting in the office worrying about how I was going to be able to pay the wages. Things looked bleak. Listings were down, settlements were drying up and the cash flow was shocking. Many sleepless nights!
So, I called Don who I knew to be very experienced and who had run a successful real estate office with a big team for many years. Surely he must have seen this himself and worked out what to do. I was right. He know exactly what to do and here is what he said……
“There is not one problem in this business that a listing will not fix. Just focus on getting a listing, then focus on selling it”.
“But it can’t be that (expletive) simple” I said. I was wrong!
It can be put another way…..
No short cuts – get back to basics!
This business is all about listing, marketing and negotiating. Do some of each of those every day and you will succeed.
